Togbi Baku IV is the reigning traditional ruler of Denu, a coastal town situated in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region of Ghana. He was enstooled on the 22nd December 1993 as the Dufia (Chief) of Denu and the custodian of the traditions, history, and cultural heritage of his people. He is a direct descendant of Baku, the legendary founder of Denu.

Early Years and Education

Togbi Baku IV was born Julius Yawo Ayivor on the 2nd January 1947  into the Royal Baku-Ayivor family of Denu. He is the second son and child of Venance Francis Kpodo Ayivor and Petrina Kudawoo in Accra. As a member of the royal household, he was raised with a deep understanding of Ewe customs, chieftaincy protocols, and traditional governance.

He pursued his early education in Ghana. He had Secondary School education in St Paul’s Senior High School and went on to study Building Technology at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Building Technology, laying the foundation for a long and impactful career in construction and development.

Working Life

He built an impressive professional portfolio as a Building Technologist, Construction Manager, and Project Consultant. He was a member of the Ghana Institution of Construction (MGIOC) and worked extensively in both public and private sector projects across Ghana, Nigeria, Benin, and Burkina Faso.

Over a career spanning more than 42 years, he held senior roles such as:

  • Project Manager at Jestac Limited
  • Resident Engineer and Consultant on various infrastructure projects for entities including SSNIT, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Health
  • Technical Manager for multinational projects in Nigeria
  • Resident Representative for the 617-bed University of Ghana Teaching Hospital at Legon
  • Program Manager (Safety) for the U.S. Embassy security upgrade projects in West Africa

His expertise included project feasibility studies, construction supervision, cost control, quality assurance, bidding documentation, and commissioning. He oversaw the development of hospitals, schools, residential complexes, markets, water supply systems, roads, and drainage networks.

Notably, he contributed to rural development through the Volta Region Agricultural Development Project (VORADEP) and education sector reforms under the Ministry of Education, supervising the construction of thousands of classrooms and sanitation facilities across Ghana.

Enstoolment

He was enstooled as Togbi Baku IV after the passing of his predecessor, Togbi Baku III, in accordance with the customs of the Anlo-Ewe chieftaincy. His installation was marked by elaborate traditional rites, purification ceremonies, and the endorsement of the Denu Traditional Council and kingmakers.

The title “Togbi” is an honorific used among the Ewe people to signify a senior chief, elder, or person of great wisdom and authority. (The title Togbi is sometimes spelt as Torgbi, Torgbui or Togbe. )

Dufia in the Ewe language translates as the Chief (Traditional Ruler).

 

Residence

The official residence Togbi Baku IV – the Dufia of Denu is Togbi Baku’s Palace.

 

Cultural Significance

Togbi Baku IV plays a critical role as the traditional ruler of the town of Denu and the patriarch of the Baku Ayivor Royal Family of the Town.

 

Role and Contributions

As a traditional ruler, Togbi Baku IV serves as:

  • Custodian of Tradition: Upholding the values, taboos, and sacred practices of the people of Denu and the broader Anlo-Ewe community.
  • Arbiter and Peacekeeper: Mediating disputes within his jurisdiction and maintaining social harmony.
  • Development Advocate: Promoting initiatives in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and cultural tourism. Togbi Baku IV is known for his support of local development projects and youth empowerment programs.
  • Spiritual Leader: Presiding over traditional festivals, rituals, and libations that connect the living with their ancestors.

 

30th Anniversary

Togbi celebrated his 30th anniversary as the Chief of Denu with a series of donations to some institutions in the town. The period of celebration lasted from December 2023 to 2024.

 

Legacy and Vision

Togbi Baku IV is committed to preserving the cultural identity of Denu while embracing modern development. His reign focuses on education, youth inclusion in tradition, and sustainable community advancement.
